Grain spawn lids
Plastic lids with 1 quarter inch air hole drilled in the top, and an SFD between lid and disc. Don’t sand lids after drilling (makes crevices for microbes)
Oat Process
- Using 10 lb 11 oz dry oats
- Rough rinse
- Fill large brewing pot with water (leaving about 2 inches)
- Bring to a boil- 30 mins
- Boiled for 45 mins, maybe a little more
- Poured in sink and rinsed again
- Let dry in sink for 1 hour
- Bagged: made 7 3 lb bags + 13 oz. Distributed 13 oz evenly across 7 bags (each bag around 3 lbs 3 oz)
- Loaded into insert in pc 2 layers of 3, 1 in the middle. Could probably fit another layer of 3
- Pressure cooking for 2.5 hours at 15-17 psi
- Steam in 50 mins

Rye Process
- Rinse rye grains then soak overnight
- Rinse one more time, then bring to a boil on high and boil for 10 mins
- Strain grains and lay out on a towel to dry for a half hour
- Load grains into jars and add lids
- Add foil to lids
- Sterilize jars in a pressure cooker at 15 psi for 1.5 hours. Use 3 quarts of water.
- Let cool overnight without opening the pressure cooker when done.
- In SC, open lids and inject ~2 ml of liquid culture into each jar
- Place jar in a dark, warm area (70-80 degrees F) to incubate for up to 2 weeks
- Once jar is 70% colonized, shake to disperse it
